"Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling."
Phillipians 2:12-13

Fear and trembling: "self-distrust, serious caution, tenderness of conscience, watchfulness against temptation, timidly shrinking from whatever might offend God and discredit the name of Christ." (Amplified Bible)

Listen to what CJ Mahaney says on this same scripture from his book, Humility: True Greatness: "This fear and trembling embraces the godly attitude of humility; it includes the fear of grieving and offending our holy gracious Father, and the awareness of our ultimate accountability to Him."

Later the scripture says "for it is God who works in you, both to will and work for his good pleasure." If God is working then we better be working also. God has given us free will to choose how we will live, and as sinners, we need to work at living the way he has called us to. But it is exciting that God is working on us for his own pleasure. Well, frankly, I have given him alot of work to do, so I'm glad he's deriving pleasure from it. I have an image of how I get pleasure from drastically chopping back a hedge. Hm.
